Verdict – R vs. Cervio Cox

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service is pleased to note the verdict of the jury in the matter of R vs. Cervio Cox that recently concluded in the Supreme Court. The verdict was a testament to the hard work and dedication of Police Officers and Prosecutors that brought the case to a successful conclusion. This case was noteworthy due to the fact that the prosecution case centered on the fact that Cox was charged under a provision in law (Section 27 of the Criminal Code) to charge:-

The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit continues to advise members of the public not to respond to unsolicited correspondence (via e-mail, fax, letter or telephone call) which claims to offer an amazing prize or cash reward – only if the ‘lucky winner’ is willing to send an amount of money first to ‘secure the winnings’ or other ‘promising opportunity.’ Also, the public should be wary of seemingly legitimate requests that appear to come from a local banking institution to update their personal or financial account information. Currently fraudulent e-mails of this nature claiming to be from HSBC Bank of Bermuda are being received by local residents. These e-mails should be ignored.



Advisory – Island Yellow Pages

The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit is once again receiving complaints from members of the public in relation to a company called ‘The Island Yellow Pages’. Recently local residents have been contacted by a representative of the Island Yellow Pages to purchase advertising space - believing that they were purchasing advertisement space in the Bermuda Yellow Pages. However, the Island Yellow Pages are not affiliated with the Bermuda Yellow Pages in any way. They are based in the U.S. Virgin Islands and accordingly are not answerable to the laws of Bermuda.



Serious Injury RTC

Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place at 8:25pm on Tuesday evening on Middle Road in Devonshire in the area of Christ Church. Details are sketchy but it appears that a 30 year old woman was riding a motorcycle traveling east on Middle Road and a truck was traveling in the other direction when the vehicles collided. The 30 year old woman was taken to the hospital where she is being treated for serious chest injuries. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the collision to call PC Linnell Williams at 295-0011.

Around 10:20pm today, Police received a report of a serious road traffic collision resulting in injury on Trimingham Road in Paget involving a truck and a motorcycle. It appears that the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when they collided. As a result the motorcycle rider, a 30 year old Devonshire man, was trapped under the truck and had to be extricated by Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel. He sustained serious head injuries as well as a broken right leg and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The truck driver was apparently uninjured. Traffic was diverted away from the scene at north & south round-a-bout.



Confirmed Firearm Incident in Pembroke

Around 12:20am today, Police received reports of gunshots in the St. Monica’s Road/The Glebe Road, Pembroke area. Officers attended the scene a short time later and made a thorough search of the vicinity including speaking with area residents. Officers attended the scene quickly and made a thorough search of the vicinity including speaking with area residents. This area is one of several that Police regularly conduct high visibility patrols in and will continue to do so. Around 6:30am today, Police returned to the area to continue their search, including officers from the Forensic Support Unit. Forensic evidence found suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured. An investigation into this matter is underway.

Police & DNDC Re-Affirm Partnership

The Department for National Drug Control (DNDC) and the Bermuda Police Service today re-affirmed their commitment towards cooperation for drug abuse control within the context of the Strategic Framework of the National Drug Control Policies and Master Plan (2007-2011). To this end the DNDC and Bermuda Police Service have agreed to take action in order to provide increased technical management and coordination opportunities, training opportunities and community actions and activities to support, integrate and coordinate on-going dissemination of drug information as well as to facilitate local training of Officers in the fundamental concepts of drug addiction.

Joint Press Conference: Minister of Labour, Home Affairs & Housing Lt. Col. David Burch & Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - We would like to bring to the public’s attention some of the successes our young people are earning through the Bermuda Police Service Cadet Programme and our Further Education Programme. The Police Cadet Programme has been in existence since the early 1960’s and has graduated hundreds of cadets who have gone on to a career in policing or other pursuits in society. We have former Cadets across the entire spectrum including doctors, lawyers and prominent business owners.



Shooting at Ice Queen

Around 3:50am today, Police received a report of a confirmed firearm incident in the vicinity of Ice Queen in Paget. The victim, a 22 year old Warwick man, was taken to KEMH for treatment of a gunshot wound to his torso. His injury is not believed to be life threatening at this time. The male suspect is described as 5’8” to 6’ tall of slim build. He made good his escape on a motorcycle heading towards the City of Hamilton. Detectives have spoken to a number of witnesses who have given accounts of what happened. However, investigators still need to speak with anyone who has not yet spoken to the Police.



BHB Investigation

Three individuals (a 55 year old Paget man, a 43 year old Paget man and a 39 year old Pembroke man) have been arrested in relation to a complaint made by the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB). All three individuals have now been released on Police bail. The BHB’s complaint is the subject of an ongoing investigation and therefore no further information will be released at this time.



Arrest & Taser Incident

Around 11am on Monday May 3rd 2010, police officers on Par-La-Ville Road in Pembroke encountered a 53 year old Hamilton parish man whom the officers had occasion to arrest in connection with an outstanding warrant. As they attempted to do so, the man attacked the officers and a violent struggle took place. One officer received minor injuries during the fight at which time he drew his Taser device from its holster and pointed it at the man. The man promptly complied with the directions of the officers and he was safely arrested.



Murder of George Lynch

Acting Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Division - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that the victim of last night’s shooting is 40 year old Hamilton Parish resident - Mr. George Lynch. Our sincere sympathies go out to the wife and family of Mr. Lynch, a Jamaican national who had come to work in Bermuda at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.



Fatal Shooting in Hamilton Parish

Around 10:30pm on Wednesday, Police received a report of a confirmed firearm incident in the Midland Heights Crescent, Hamilton parish area. Details about what occurred are unclear at this time; however it appears that a 40 year old Hamilton parish man was fatally shot outside a residence in the area. He was subsequently pronounced dead. No further information will be released until the deceased’s next of kin has been notified. Inquiries into this incident are underway.



Armed Robbery in Sandys Parish

Around 8:55pm on Wednesday, Police received a report of a robbery at the Boaz Island Shell gas station in Sandys parish. Details about what occurred are unclear at this time; however it appears that two unknown men entered the gas station, one brandishing what appeared to be a firearm and the other brandishing a bladed article. They stole a quantity of cash before making good their escape. There were no reported injuries.

The aim of the awards is to publicly recognise the outstanding achievements being made in Bermuda’s information technology industry.

Around 4:10pm today, Police received a report of a road traffic collision resulting in injury involving a pedestrian and a car on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with Aubrey Road. It appears that a 12 year old Hamilton parish boy disembarked a bus in the area and attempted to cross the road when he was struck by a car traveling east on North Shore Road. The 12 year old student received what are believed to be non-life threatening head injuries and abrasions to his body. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. Inquiries into this incident are underway.



Sudden Death

At 11:34am today, Police responded to a report of a sudden death that took place at a Devon Spring Road, Devonshire residence. A 49 year old Canadian man (guest worker) was found in an unresponsive state inside the residence. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified (the deceased’s relatives are overseas). Inquiries into this incident are underway.
