Press Conference Regarding Recent Confirmed Firearm Incidents

Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - Three firearms incidents occurred in less than 15 hours in North Hamilton. The first involved a report of gunshots occurring at 10:20pm Friday, March 25th 2011. A scene was located at the junction of Laffan Street & Cedar Avenue where a number of shell casings and a bullet head were recovered. There is no indication that any person was injured as a result.
Serious Injury RTC In Pembroke

Around 2:15am on Monday, March 28th 2011 Police attended a reported serious single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Cavendish Road and Lane Hill in Pembroke. Details about how the collision occurred are unclear at the moment; however a male motorcyclist was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Apparently his injuries may be serious but they are not believed to be life threatening at this time. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Around 1:30pm on Saturday, March 26th 2011 police responded to a report of gunshots in the Rambling Lane, Pembroke area. There have been no reported injuries. At the time of the report, plain-clothed officers from the Forensic Support Unit and the Serious Crime Unit were in the area processing the scene of the earlier firearm incident and heard the shots. Police remain at the scene and are continuing inquires into both incidents. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.

Around 11:50pm on Friday, March 25th 2011 Police responded to a confirmed firearm incident on Rambling Lane in Pembroke. Details are unclear at this time; however, it appears that a 16 year old male was shot and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance where his condition at this point is unknown. Police are appealing for anyone that may have any information about this incident or may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the Rambling Lane, Parsons Road, Curving Avenue Pembroke area to please contact Police on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.

Police & Students Tackle Graffiti In Warwick

Around 2pm today officers from the Western (Parishes) Community Action Team and students from T. N. Tatem Middle School selected two bus passenger shelters on Middle Road in Warwick to clean up after graffiti appeared on them recently. The students and PC Donville Yarde alongside PC Valerius Jean Louis painted over the graffiti in the bus passenger shelters as well as graffiti on a nearby wall in the vicinity of the Belmont Hills Golf Resort & Spa. They were supervised by Sergeant Michelle Simons.

Police & Students Clean Up Parsons Bay

Between 1:30pm and 3pm today officers from the Western (Parishes) Community Action Team as well as teachers/students from the Lagoon Park Pre-School and Bermuda High School for Girls cleaned up the Parsons Bay, Sandys parish area and placed blue bird boxes. Members of the West End Development Corporation also assisted in hauling away some of the larger debris. The Police officers pictured are PC Donville Yarde, PC Valerius Jean Louis and PC Cerepha Bridgeman [more photos].

Acting Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman – On Monday, March 21st 2011 the Bermuda Police Service received the judgment handed down by the Court of Appeal in relation to the five police officers who had sought legal remedies in relation to not being offered further terms of service.
Extradition of Jahmel Blakeney

The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that following an exhaustive legal process in the United States, Mr. Jahmel Glen Blakeney will be extradited to Bermuda in the near future to face attempted murder charges relating to the November 2009 shootings of two persons at the Southside Cinema. Mr. Blakeney had been arrested in the early hours following the shooting and was placed on Police bail. He subsequently left the Island whilst on Police bail and did not return to Bermuda.
Serious Assault In Sandys Parish

Police responded to a report of a serious assault that took place around 12:30 this afternoon (Sunday) outside a residence on Pleasantville Lane in Sandys. It appears that the victim, a 57 year old Sandys man was set upon by a 26 year old Sandys man resulting in the victim receiving stab wounds about the body. Presently the 57 year old victim is in serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Police are actively canvassing the surrounding areas looking for the suspect. Anyone with any information about this incident should contact Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.

The Bermuda Police Service is appealing for the public’s assistance in locating 16 year old Santina Harvey. The Pembroke teenager was last seen at her residence on Friday, March 11th 2011 and is described as brown skinned, approximately 5’4” tall with long hair usually worn in a ponytail. She is known to frequent the St. John’s Road and Spanish Point areas of Pembroke.
Legislative Changes Needed To Address Driving While On A Mobile Phone

The Bermuda Police Service is awaiting amendments to the Traffic Offences Procedure Act & the Traffic Offences (Penalties) Act from the legislature to enable officers to ticket offences relating to driving while using a mobile phone. As such, there are administrative challenges enforcing the new legislation as widely as we would like.

The victims of these offences were motorcycle riders and the suspects were also on a motorcycle. During the incidents one of the suspects brandished what appeared to be a firearm.

Paget Man Charged With Firearm Offences

31 year old Jahcai Morris of Paget appeared in Magistrates’ Court today charged with possessing/handling a firearm. On 9th November 2010 Police Officers acting on information attended Cobbs Hill Road, Paget. The officers recovered a loaded ‘KIMMEL AP-9’ semi-automatic firearm. The Serious Crime Unit has been investigating the recovery of this weapon, and on Friday 11th March, 2011 the defendant was arrested in connection with this matter. He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Wednesday, March 23rd.

Around 5:45pm on Monday, Police received a report of a serious road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish in the vicinity of Shelly Bay involving a car, an auxiliary cycle & a motorcycle. It appears that all three vehicles were traveling along North Shore Road when they collided. The auxiliary cycle rider and the motorcycle rider were both injured & taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. The auxiliary cycle rider, a 17 year old St. George’s man, has potentially life threatening injuries. The male motorcyclist’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
3rd Suspect Charged For 2009 Attempted Murder at Southside Cinema

25 year old Kinte Smith appeared in Magistrates’ Court today charged with two counts of attempted murder as well as possession of a firearm & ammunition in connection with the November 2009 shooting of two people at Southside Cinema. The defendant left the Island two days after the shootings, and he was returned to Bermuda from Canada by Canadian Immigration authorities on Wednesday 9th March, 2011. He was arrested by members of the Bermuda Police Serious Crime Unit on his arrival in Bermuda and has remained in custody since that time. Smith was remanded into custody pending an appearance back at court on Monday 28th March 2011. A trial date will be set by the courts at a later date.

Around 3:55pm on Wednesday, Police responded to a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Loyal Hill. Details about how the collision occurred are unclear at this time; however it apparently involved two auxiliary cycles and a car. The two auxiliary cycle riders were injured; one sustaining a head injury. However, their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Traffic was temporarily diverted away from the scene while officers assessed the incident before the road was re-opened. Inquiries are ongoing.
Verify Unsolicited Phone Calls

The Bermuda Police Service is aware of some residents receiving phone calls regarding an alleged electrical usage / hot water heater usage survey. Apparently an unidentified male caller claims that he is conducting a survey of these utilities and needs to arrange a home inspection.
We continue to recommend that members of the public receiving these phone calls or similar phone calls ask for the caller’s name, phone number and credentials to verify if the call is genuine. Any unsubstantiated calls should be reported to Police.
