Firearm and Ammunition Recovered

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2023, police officers were on mobile patrol along Park Lane Pembroke, when they approached a small group of people gathered in the area. Upon seeing the officers, a male member of the group ran off and dropped a number of items as he fled. Officers recovered the items, which included a firearm and a quantity of ammunition. The subject was subsequently arrested after he was discovered hiding at a nearby residence. An investigation into this matter is now underway. Some Parish Officers Temporarily Re-Deployed to General Patrol Duties

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) wishes to inform the public that commencing Monday, March 4th, 2024, a number of Parish Officers will be re-deployed to general patrol duties. This re-deployment will last until, Tuesday, April 30th, 2024 and is part of continued efforts to make Bermuda safer. This means there will be limited access to your Parish Officers during the period mentioned. The BPS apologises for any inconvenience this temporary change may cause, as we recognize the value that Parish Officers bring to our community. Confirmed Firearm Incident in Paget: No Reported Injuries

Detectives are currently investigating a confirmed firearm incident that occurred around 12:55am Tuesday, 27th February 2024, outside a Tribe Road Number 5, Paget home. Bermuda Police Service (BPS) patrol officers responded and secured the scene. Forensic evidence collected at that location confirmed that a firearm had been discharged. However, there were no reported injuries. So far, limited information indicates that two potential suspects were travelling together on a motorcycle in the area, at the time the gunshots were heard. ‘Operation Holly’: Three Arrested, Cash & Suspected Drugs Seized

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) issued a public advisory on 20th February 2024, concerning the suspected presence of fentanyl-laced heroin in the community, which has resulted in the hospitalisation of three individuals. On Saturday, 24th February 2024, the BPS executed an operation dubbed ‘Operation Holly’, under the authority of the Misuse of Drugs Act. Police officers from the Drug Unit, Tactical Department, and Criminal Investigation Unit participated in the exercise. Three people have been arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply, after police conducted search warrants at three residences in Pembroke Parish, seizing a quantity of suspected heroin, drug paraphernalia, and cash. Superintendent Sherwin Joseph, Crime Division, emphasized, "The successful seizures have effectively disrupted a drug network operating in Bermuda and have contributed to the protection of our community from the harmful effects of illicit or dangerous drugs.” The Bermuda Police Service remains committed to fostering a safe and secure environment for all residents. Witness Appeal: Disturbance Believed Linked to Confirmed Firearm Incident

Around 9:55 a.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2024, police received a report of a disturbance at Warwick Pharmacy carpark. Information received indicated approximately six males were involved and two of them had brandished knives. The suspects left the area on motorcycles prior to police arrival. This incident is believed to be linked with the shooting which occurred later on the said day on South Avenue, Southampton. Police are particularly interested in speaking with persons who were in the carpark while the incident was in progress. We would also like to speak with anyone else who may have witnessed or who may have any information at all, on this matter. Witness Appeal: Confirmed Firearm Incident, No Reported Injuries

Police are investigating a confirmed firearms incident which occurred in the Southampton area on Sunday, February 25, 2024. Around 4:22 p.m. on that date police received a report of a single gunshot heard in the area. Detectives are now looking for two suspects who rode away from the scene on a dark coloured motorcycle which did not have license plates. The suspects were last seen traveling in an easterly direction along Middle Road, Warwick. Collision in St. George’s

Wednesday, February 21,2024

Around 9:30am on Wednesday 21st of February 2024, police and other first responders were dispatched to a reported single vehicle collision on St. David’s Road, St. George’s. Initial information suggests that a 22 year old female was traveling west on a motorcycle, when she lost control of the vehicle on the bend near the old bridge. On arrival, first responders found the woman to be unconscious. She was conveyed to King Edward Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries, the extent of which are unknown at this time. However, at last check, she was conscious and alert. Traffic was diverted on to Southside Road, while police processed the scene. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to call PC Tavares Douglas on 211.



Public Advisory (Fentanyl)

The Bermuda Police Service wishes to alert the public to the presence of suspected fentanyl laced heroin in the community. There have been three instances where individuals taken to hospital for treatment for suspected overdose on this illegal substance. An investigation into these matters is now underway. The public are advised that Fentanyl use, even in small doses, can result in serious adverse effects, which are compounded when combined with other drugs, particularly other opioids such as heroin. Individuals who use this drug put themselves in very real danger, which can potentially occur very soon after only one instance of fentanyl use. Signs of overdose: Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils” Falling asleep or losing consciousness Slow, weak, or no breathing Choking or gurgling sounds Limp body Cold and/or clammy skin Discolored skin (especially in lips and nails) Side effects of fentanyl and dangers of fentanyl misuse can include (but are not limited to): Hallucinations and visual disturbances. Drowsiness and nausea. Confusion. Respiratory distress. Muscle rigidity. Unconsciousness or sedation. Seizures. Overdose. If you suspect someone may have used Fentanyl or Fentanyl laced substances, you should: Immediately contact 911. Try to keep the person awake and breathing. Lay the person on their side to prevent choking. Stay with the person until emergency assistance arrives. BPS Driver Training Courses Advisory for All Road Users

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Driver Training Unit currently has several driver training courses in progress. All involve the use of police cars and police motorcycles, at times travelling at high speeds, on our roads. The police car and motorcycle training started Monday, 12th February 2024, with this latest training scheduled to be completed by Friday, 8th March 2024. BPS driver training currently underway includes three-week standard, response and advanced car courses, as well as a three-week standard BPS motorcycle course. A two-week instructors in car course is also underway. Use of emergency equipment (lights and sirens) will depend on the training objective. Members of the public can recognise the BPS car driver training vehicles by the training plate at the front and rear of the police vehicle. Trainee BPS motorcyclists will be wearing high visibility vests. Road users are reminded to give way and exercise caution when they encounter BPS driver training vehicles, just as they would any emergency vehicle.



Witness Appeal: Reported Car & Pedestrian Collision in Devonshire [Updated]

Police are investigating a reported road traffic collision, involving a pedestrian and motorcar, which occurred near the junction of Alexandra Road and Middle Road,  Devonshire, around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. Information is that a a motor car was traveling west along Middle Road in Devonshire, near the junction with Alexandra Road, when a young man ran across the street, resulting in a collision. The young man, believed to be between 15-17 years of age, got up and attempted to leave the scene, narrowly avoiding being struck by another vehicle. He is described as having light skin, braces, black hair worn low and of small to medium build. He was wearing a black t-shirt, black and grey pants, and carrying a backpack. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call 247-1705 or, the main police number, 295-0011. Update: The parents or guardian of the young man involved in the collision are also asked to make contact with police.



Bermuda Reserve Police Seek New Recruits for Voluntary Service

Men and women from 18 to 57 years of age, seeking a unique opportunity to volunteer within our community, are encouraged to apply for the Bermuda Reserve Police. The recruitment process involves written tests, physical tests and a medical assessment. Applicants are advised that standards for the Bermuda Reserve Police are similar to the Bermuda Police Service. Basic training will cover many subjects in depth, to the same level of career police recruits. Similarly, duties performed by Reserve Police officers are many and varied. They are trained in the basics of police work and have the same powers of arrest as career police officers. It should also be noted that the Commissioner of Police may deem an applicant ineligible at any stage of the recruitment process. An initial commitment of three years’ service is expected of successful Reserve Police Constable candidates. Witness Appeal: Kyari Flood Murder Investigation One Year On

Around 1:00pm, Monday, February 13, 2023, police received a call from a member of the public who found the lifeless body of a male in a secluded area covered by trees and shrubbery off of Border Lane South, Friswells Road, Pembroke. The body was that of 23-year-old Kyari Flood of Pembroke Parish, who died as a result of gunshot wounds. His death was the first murder of 2023. A 20-year-old male from Devonshire and a 19-year-old male from Pembroke were arrested shortly after the discovery of Mr. Flood’s body. Both men were subsequently released on police bail while the investigation into the murder of Mr. Flood continues. Detective Inspector Jason Smith of the Serious Crimes Unit stated: “I wish to thank those members of the public who have so far come forward and provided us with information on this matter. Please understand that any information, even if you think it to be insignificant, could prove valuable to our ongoing investigation.” Mr. Smith added: “While we are deeply appreciative of the assistance we’ve received from the public so far, we know there are other members of the community who have information that could prove helpful in solving this crime, bringing those responsible for Mr. Flood’s murder to justice. Local Recruitment for Police Constables Underway

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is inviting applications for the post of Constable. Local residents who are looking for a career in law enforcement, with a desire to represent the community, and assist in ‘Making Bermuda Safer’, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must: be between the ages of 19 and 49 years at the start of the contract; be in good physical and mental health; have a Bermuda School Diploma (BSD) or equivalent. Applications from non-Bermudian resident work permit holders, or their spouses who are permitted to seek employment in Bermuda, may be considered. The successful applicants must then pass the following evaluations to be considered for the Recruit Foundation Course (RFC). Police Service Initial Recruitment Test (PIRT). Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT) – (Level 5.4 – 15 metre beep test). Security Checks. Suitability Testing. Psychological Evaluations. Medical Examinations (which includes BMI Assessment). Assessment Board. The RFC lasts for six months with on the job training, academic modules, course work, exams, and practical exercises. The academic learning on this course is undertaken and coincides with serving as a Student Police Officer, which involves active frontline duties for the Bermuda Police Service. 14 BPS Officers Complete Multiple-Choice Writing Course

Fourteen officers from the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) recently completed a five day, UK College of Policing Multiple-Choice Question Writing Course at the BPS Training School, which was facilitated by Ms. Louise Dennis and Mr. Hurden Law, from the College of Policing. The course was conducted between January 22nd – 26th 2024. The officers who attended the course varied from Constable to Superintendent, and work in various units within the police service, reflecting a diverse range of expertise and experiences. The training has allowed the BPS to increase its’ capacity of officers qualified to write multiple-choice questions and conduct associated examination processes within the BPS. Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. James Howard said, “The completion of this course marks a significant milestone for the Bermuda Police Service, as it signifies an increase in the number of officers qualified to proficiently write multiple-choice questions. This enhanced capacity empowers our capability to maintain rigorous standards in assessment and evaluation. We are immensely proud of the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our officers throughout this training endeavour. Their newfound skills and knowledge will undoubtedly contribute to the continued effectiveness and efficiency of the Bermuda Police Service. Confirmed Firearms Incident in Pembroke: No Reported Injuries

Around 12:35 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, police received a 911 call reporting multiple gunshots heard in the Crossland Lane area, Pembroke. Officers attended and upon arrival, found evidence to confirm a firearm had been discharged at that location. There were no reported injuries. Inquiries at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital confirmed no one had attended the facility seeking treatment for a firearm related injury. Reported Serious Motorcycle Collision in Devonshire

Around 3:20 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, police and EMTs were dispatched to a reported single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle on Middle Road, Devonshire, near the junction with Orange Valley Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male with an apparent head injury lying unresponsive on the roadway. EMTs attended to him at the scene and he was subsequently transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of head and neck injuries which are described as serious. Non-Life Threatening Injuries for Two Riders Hurt in Crow Lane Collision

Two riders hurt in a collision along Crow Lane, Pembroke Wednesday afternoon received non-life threatening injuries. It now appears that the two vehicle collision occurred around 1:15pm Wednesday, 31st January 2024, when a motorcyclist travelling along Crow Lane leaving the City of Hamilton and the rider of a 50cc scooter, travelling in the opposite direction along Crow Lane, collided at the junction with Spurling Hill, as the scooter rider attempted to turn up Spurling Hill. Bermuda Police Service (BPS), Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service, as well as ambulance personnel, responded. It is understood that the 17-year-old local male 50cc scooter rider was treated at the scene for non-life threatening leg injuries, while the motorcyclist, said to be a 43-year-old Pembroke man, apparently sustained injuries to his face, hands and legs. The motorcyclist was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment and later discharged. Reported Two Vehicle Collision at Crow Lane, Spurling Hill Junction [Updated]

Around 1:25pm Wednesday, 31st January 2024, a reported two vehicle collision occurred at the junction of Crow Lane and Spurling Hill, Pembroke. Police, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service as well as ambulance personnel responded. Details remain limited at this time. However, a 50cc scooter and a motorcycle were involved, with both riders injured. One of the riders is believed to have been more seriously hurt than the other. However, medical updates on both injured individuals are anticipated in due course. Motorists experienced traffic delays at the junction of Crow Lane and Spurling Hill for approximately two and a half hours, while the scene was processed by Bermuda Police Service (BPS) personnel. Inquiries continue regarding the circumstances of this collision. 78-Year-Old Female Pedestrian Injured in Suspected Hit & Run

Around 1pm Monday, 29th January 2024, uniformed police officers responded to a suspected hit and run road traffic collision, involving a 78-year-old female pedestrian, at the junction of North Shore Road and Callen Glen Rise in Hamilton parish. It appears that the Hamilton parish resident was crossing North Shore Road from the waterside, heading towards Callen Glen Rise, when she was apparently struck by a motorcyclist travelling east. It is understood that the rider continued east along North Shore Road. On police arrival, the 78-year-old woman was found lying in the grass near the westbound lane, being assisted by members of the public. She was then transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and later discharged. Inquiries by the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) continue regarding the circumstances of this suspected hit and run road traffic collision. So far, no description of the motorcycle or rider believed to have been involved, has come to light. Any witnesses, or persons with relevant information, particularly anyone who may have seen a motorcyclist travelling east at speed along North Shore Road, Hamilton parish between Francis Patton Primary School and Blue Hole Hill around 1pm Monday, 29th January 2024, are encouraged to contact Constable 2572 Tyler Nelmes on 211, e-mail tnelmes@bps.bm or speak with a police officer they know. Reported Damage Only Collision Involving Car & Bus in Southampton

Around 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024, police were dispatched to a road traffic collision involving a motorcar and a Department of Public Transportation bus. Reports are the bus was traveling east on Middle Road near the junction with Jennings Bay Road, Southampton, when a motorcar traveling in the opposite direction, swerved into the eastbound lane and collided with the bus. There were no reported injuries.
