At 4:05pm on Monday, Police received a report of a robbery on South Road in Southampton. Shortly after receiving the report officers spoke with the victim, an 80 year old male visitor to the island, who stated that around 1pm he left Henry VIII Restaurant & Bar after purchasing items there and began walking back along South Road to his Garden Path, Southampton residence. As he neared his destination, he was jumped from behind by an unknown man. A struggle ensued between the two men, with the victim being pushed to the ground by the suspect before he made good his escape on foot towards South Road. Nothing was taken from the 80 year old Irish visitor, although his glasses were apparently lost in the struggle. The victim sustained cuts and abrasions to his hands, knees and face. He was advised to visit the hospital for medical treatment but declined the offer. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6' tall, of athletic build with a round face. He is believed to be in his early 20s, clean shaven with a short haircut. He was wearing dark coloured long pants and a light coloured shirt. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.

Assault on Police

At 10am on Monday, Police on mobile patrol in the area of Middletown Lane and King Street in Pembroke observed a man riding a motorcycle acting in a suspicious manner. The man was stopped and spoken to by officers, and subsequently searched. At this point, the suspect (who was still sitting on the motorcycle) attempted to flee, riding into one of the officers. A violent struggle took place between the officer and the suspect, as he continued to ride off with the officer on the front of the motorcycle. Eventually both men and the cycle fell to the ground, where the suspect continued to struggle. Assistance was called for and additional Police units arrived on the scene quickly, arresting the suspect, a 38 year old Pembroke man, for possession of a controlled drug and assault on Police. The Pembroke man was taken to Hamilton Police station, then KEMH after complaining of pain to his ribs. However, at the hospital he declined medical treatment. Further inquiries revealed the cycle involved in the incident was stolen. The officer sustained abrasions to his knees, hands and elbows. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
